Two confirmed Nipah infections trigger containment measures

Health authorities have confirmed two Nipah virus cases in West Bengal involving two nurses at a private hospital near Kolkata. Reports said one of the infected nurses is in critical condition, prompting intensified surveillance and containment measures to prevent further spread.

Officials indicated the two nurses likely contracted the infection after treating a patient who had severe respiratory symptoms and later died before testing could be completed. That patient is being treated as a suspected index case while investigations continue.

Testing, quarantine and expanded surveillance

As part of the response, authorities have tested a large number of people linked to the exposure chain and quarantined high-risk contacts. The situation has also brought national agencies into the response, including specialised public health teams focused on outbreak surveillance.

Given that Nipah is a zoonotic disease—spreading from animals to humans and sometimes between humans—officials have also moved to examine possible animal reservoirs. Reports noted sampling and testing activity involving bats, since fruit bats are known carriers in outbreaks.

Why Nipah is treated as high-risk

Nipah is considered especially serious because of its high fatality risk and the absence of a specific cure or widely available vaccine. Symptoms can range from fever and respiratory distress to severe neurological illness, and rapid escalation is possible in some patients.
