The infections are suspected to be linked to exposure while treating a patient with severe respiratory symptoms who died before being tested, and who is being treated as a possible index case.

As part of the immediate public health response, officials have expanded surveillance and testing in the region and placed high-risk contacts under quarantine. Reports noted that, as of 20 January, 180 people had been tested and 20 high-risk contacts quarantined, with initial tests returning negative, while follow-up testing is planned at the end of isolation periods.
