ICMR accelerates work on potential RNA-based therapy as chikungunya burden rises

The initiative includes inviting Indian companies to partner in development and manufacturing, signalling a push to move from laboratory promise to real-world delivery.

The report frames this as a response to an ongoing burden rather than a short, isolated flare-up. It cites surveillance figures that suggest a substantial number of suspected cases and confirmed infections during early 2025, with multiple states affected. For public health planners, this kind of sustained load creates pressure not just for prevention but also for better clinical options.

What the experimental approach targets

Scientists at ICMR’s National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, are reported to have developed an experimental therapy based on RNA interference (RNAi). In simple terms, RNAi aims to block the virus’s ability to make key proteins by targeting the messenger RNA involved in that process. The report says the approach targets two essential viral genes—E2 and nsP1.

In pre-clinical testing described in the report, the experimental method suppressed viral replication in laboratory cell lines and in mouse models. Based on these early findings, ICMR has offered the technology for transfer to industry, which is typically an important step if a candidate is to move toward larger studies, manufacturing planning and regulatory pathways.

Chikungunya is often seen as a fever that passes, but many patients experience disabling joint pain that persists for weeks or months, impacting work and daily life. In outbreaks, that translates into a productivity hit and a clinical burden that is not always captured by case numbers alone.

Even with any promising candidate therapy, major steps remain: proving safety, demonstrating effectiveness in humans, scaling production, and ensuring access. Still, ICMR’s decision to accelerate development and bring in industry partners suggests a push for an India-based solution that can be manufactured at scale if clinical results support it.
