A familiar winter crisis, measured in blunt terms

Delhi’s winter smog has again drawn global attention, with a new analysis translating the capital’s particulate pollution into “cigarette equivalents” to communicate health risk in everyday language. Using Indian government air-quality readings over roughly two and a half months and applying a conversion method referenced in the report, the finding suggests that breathing Delhi’s air during peak season can be comparable to smoking several cigarettes a day.

While the exact number varies by neighbourhood and day, the headline takeaway is consistent: the city’s exposure is not a short-lived inconvenience but a prolonged public-health stressor. The report also notes that, despite policy initiatives over the past decade, Delhi’s winter air has not shown a sustained improvement that residents can reliably feel year after year.

Why it persists

Experts cited in the report point to a pattern of reactionary interventions—such as sprinkling water or experimenting with cloud seeding—rather than durable structural fixes. The underlying drivers remain difficult and politically costly: vehicle emissions in a fast-growing metropolis, fossil-fuel dependence including coal-linked power generation in the wider region, industrial sources, construction dust, and seasonal farm-fire smoke drifting across north India.

The criticism is not that emergency steps are useless, but that they often arrive after pollution has already peaked and do little to change the next winter’s baseline.

Health impact and inequality

The report links prolonged PM2.5 exposure with serious health outcomes, including elevated heart and lung disease risk and a measurable hit to life expectancy. It also emphasises the unequal burden: people who work outdoors and families with fewer resources face higher exposure and fewer protective options, such as air purifiers, better-sealed housing or the ability to temporarily relocate.

Public frustration in Delhi tends to spike each winter as schools, hospitals and neighbourhoods grapple with poor air. The bigger challenge, as researchers and clinicians repeatedly argue, is converting seasonal outrage into year-round emissions reductions—especially on transport, power, industry and agricultural burning—so that the city is not forced to treat a predictable crisis like an annual surprise.
