Republic Day diplomacy: Ursula von der Leyen calls India’s success stabilising, as trade talks gather momentum before summit
As EU leaders attended India’s Republic Day parade in New Delhi, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted India’s role in global stability and prosperity. Her remarks came ahead of the EU–India Summit on 27 January 2026, where both sides are expected to push forward discussions on a long-awaited trade agreement and broader strategic cooperation.
The political messaging around India’s Republic Day celebrations this year carried an unmistakably international tone, as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa attended the 77th Republic Day parade as chief guests at Kartavya Path in New Delhi.
Von der Leyen described the invitation as a major personal honour and used the moment to underline the EU’s political framing of India’s rise. In public remarks shared during the visit, she argued that a stronger and more successful India contributes to a more stable, prosperous and secure world, positioning India as an important partner in the EU’s strategic thinking.
The timing is not incidental. The Republic Day appearance comes immediately ahead of the EU–India Summit scheduled for 27 January 2026.
