Uttarakhand implements UCC Amendment Ordinance 2026 with stricter provisions against coercion and fraud

Uttarakhand has implemented the Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026, bringing a new set of changes to the state’s Uniform Civil Code framework. The ordinance came into force with immediate effect after receiving the assent of Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Gurmit Singh, according to a PTI report carried by The Week.

Officials said the amendments are aimed at making provisions clearer and more practical, improving administrative efficiency and strengthening protection of citizens’ rights. A key focus is on stricter penal measures to address coercion, fraud and unlawful acts in marriage and live-in relationships.

Among the changes, the ordinance makes misrepresentation of identity at the time of marriage a ground for annulment. Authorities also described the amendments as steps to make enforcement more effective and transparent, with sharper consequences for violations.
