India’s semiconductor and AI push highlighted at WEF 2026, with focus on fabs, R&D and IndiaAI Mission
A WEF 2026-linked update from KPMG spotlights India’s push on semiconductors and AI—highlighting approvals for semiconductor fabs, deep-tech R&D funding and scaling under the IndiaAI Mission. The note frames India as building an execution-led ecosystem across design, talent and infrastructure.
India’s accelerating push in semiconductors and artificial intelligence was highlighted in a World Economic Forum 2026-linked industry note, which emphasised an “execution-led” shift from policy intent to ecosystem building. The update underlined the country’s attempt to expand chip-making capacity, strengthen upstream inputs and build talent pipelines, while also scaling AI compute and governance frameworks.

The note said India has approved six semiconductor fabrication plants (fabs), framing this as an inflection point aimed at creating domestic manufacturing depth beyond chip design. It also pointed to allocations for deep-tech research and development, arguing that public funding and global partnerships are being used to accelerate the broader semiconductor mission, including packaging and testing capacity.
On the AI side, the update referenced the IndiaAI Mission and described large-scale GPU deployment aimed at supporting research, startups and wider adoption. It also mentioned the creation of an IndiaAI Safety Institute, positioning governance, risk management and standards-setting as a parallel track to compute scale-up.
Industry watchers increasingly see semiconductor capability as a strategic lever—reducing dependence on imports, improving supply security for critical infrastructure and enabling specialised chips for telecom, defence, automotive and data centres. The discussion around fabs is also tied to long-term efforts to create domestic supplier networks for gases, chemicals and advanced materials.
The AI narrative is similarly being framed as a cross-sector productivity play, with the expectation that adoption will spread beyond IT into healthcare, agriculture, education and manufacturing. The emphasis on safety and governance reflects global concerns around model reliability, data protection, and responsible deployment—areas where countries are racing not only to innovate, but also to define rules that can travel across borders.
For India’s tech ecosystem, the theme is scale with guardrails: building compute and hardware depth, while simultaneously strengthening standards and institutional capacity. The next test will be sustained execution—how quickly projects move from approvals to operational capacity, and how effectively talent, supply chains and power/water infrastructure are aligned to support high-end manufacturing and AI workloads.
