Process node and system design choices

According to the report, the Maia 200 uses Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co’s 3-nanometre process, reflecting the industry trend that leading AI chips increasingly depend on advanced manufacturing nodes for performance and efficiency. The architecture described includes four chips connected per server using Ethernet cables, a notable design choice in an ecosystem where Nvidia’s platforms are often associated with different high-speed interconnect approaches.

The rollout is also connected to Microsoft’s wider AI organisational priorities, including usage by its internal AI teams. Strategically, custom chips can reduce dependency on external suppliers, control costs at hyperscale, and optimise performance for specific model-training and inference needs.
