India’s 77th Republic Day parade showcases military hardware, cultural tableaux and EU leaders as chief guests

India celebrated its 77th Republic Day on Monday, 26 January 2026, with a large ceremonial parade on Kartavya Path in New Delhi, the capital’s central boulevard used for national events. Thousands of spectators lined the route as marching contingents, bands and floats moved through the main venue under tight security arrangements.

The parade blended pageantry with a show of strength. Military and paramilitary personnel marched in formation, followed by columns of domestically produced defence equipment. European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen attended Republic Day celebrations as guests of honour, signalling a strengthening India–EU relationship ahead of the 16th EU–India Summit scheduled in New Delhi on 27 January 2026.

Republic Day commemorates the Constitution coming into force on 26 January 1950. Across the country, state capitals and major cities also held their own parades and flag-hoisting programmes, mirroring the themes of unity, service and civic pride that define the national observance each year.
